Cool & Climate-Ready Neighborhoods

Heat Solutions for Your Neighborhood

The Department of Resilience and Sustainability leads the Cool Neighborhoods Program, a citywide effort to reduce extreme heat and build long-term resilience where it is needed most. Through projects like cool pavement, tree planting, shade structures, and home weatherization, we are working to lower temperatures, improve comfort, and protect public health across our neighborhoods.

A study by UTSA identified Districts 2, 3, and 5 as some of the hottest areas in the city, where rising temperatures pose greater risks, especially for children, older adults, and households with limited cooling options. These findings help guide our investments and ensure resources reach the communities most affected by heat.

Residents play an important role in this work. Visit our Cool Neighborhoods Program page to learn more, share your story, and get involved.

The Heat Resilience Playbook explains how extreme heat affects San Antonio and outlines the practical steps the City is taking to keep neighborhoods cooler and safer, while showing residents what programs, resources, and actions they can use to protect themselves and get involved.

Creating a Network of Heat Resilience

In addition to City-led programs like Cool Neighborhoods, which deliver services and infrastructure improvements to reduce heat, the Department of Resilience and Sustainability also supports Climate Ready Neighborhoods (CRN)—a community-rooted network that builds local leadership and connects neighbors to climate resilience tools and resources.

Climate Ready Neighborhoods links climate information, training, funding, and support through trusted community spaces known as Neighborhood PODs. These PODs serve as local hubs where residents, organizations, and businesses can learn, organize, and take action together. Growing participation in CRN is critical to strengthening neighborhood-level resilience and ensuring solutions are shaped by the community.

Whether you are part of a Neighborhood Association, small business, house of worship, nonprofit, or simply a committed neighbor, there is a role for you. Visit the Online Hub to access organizing toolkits, register for workshops, explore the Climate Ready Resource Library, and learn about funding opportunities. Join the network as an individual, a Neighborhood POD, or a Resource Partner and help build a more resilient, connected San Antonio.
